Nearly 100 Individuals Participate in Basketball-based Youth Leadership and Mentoring Program
Miami, FL (March 23, 2015) – After-School All-Stars South Florida (www.sfasas.org), part of the nation’s leading non-profit after-school program provider, will host its signature free week-long, intensive youth leadership and mentoring program called Camp Hoop Heroes (CHH). This camp serves as a remarkable opportunity for forty middle school girls and boys to interact and learn from the forty college-educated volunteer mentors, coaches and inspiring guests speakers. The goals of CHH are to provide these students with one-on-one time with caring mentors during their spring break while keeping them active and getting them excited for their future. The camp, now in its third year, is sponsored by the Miami Heat, Baptist Health, Fox Sports and Florida International University. It takes place inside the Heat’s practice courts at the American Airlines Arena from March 23rd to 27th.
ASAS is excited to announce Alonzo Mourning, former Heat player, and NBA Hall of Famer will serve as a special CHH guest speaker. Students will be receiving a copy of his book “Resilience” where Mourning says, “You can wait and hope, or you can make it happen.” Camp Hoop Heroes vows to help these children “make it happen” for themselves.
Daily basketball drills, leadership activities and career exploration fieldtrips, along with the inspiring words of guest speakers, will help the campers explore important leadership skills including: Vision, Discipline, Service, Teamwork and Resilience.
VP of External Relations for ASAS South Florida, Natalia Sol says, “The goal of After-School All-Stars, our sponsors and volunteers of Camp Hoop Heroes is to inspire our students by showing them the many exciting opportunities available to them in high school, college and beyond. We believe that through the experiential teaching power of sports and positive role models, they will develop as leaders and dare to dream big.”
