Deloitte Supports Skill-Based Volunteering at Summer Leadership Program for Low-Income Youth Leaders in Washington DC

WASHINGTON, DC – After-School All-Stars (ASAS) announced the successful conclusion of All Star University, a weeklong leadership development program which graduated 25 Youth Advisory Board Members. ASAS, one of the largest middle school-focused afterschool programs in America, provides this unique summer experience to low income, urban middle school students representing 70,000 students from 20 major U.S. cities. Students serve a one year term on the ASAS National Youth Advisory Board (YAB) where they offer input to staff on new national curriculum and strategies for supporting at risk students. They also receive long-term career planning, mentoring, and skills needed to help succeed in school and the workforce.

As part of this rigorous training, five volunteers from Deloitte’s Greater Washington offices joined the students for a business case study and mentorship opportunity. This workshop is the most recent in a series of events between Deloitte professionals and ASAS DC students geared toward enabling students to explore different career opportunities.

“It was incredible to mentor these bright students, sharing with them our experience and the skills we employ every day, to help them bring their authentic selves into the professional workforce,” said Stephanie Catherine, business technology analyst, Deloitte Consulting LLP. “We know youth in low-income communities can face significant challenges, but our goal is to help these students on their paths to success.”

Deloitte has a strong commitment to supporting programs which can help unlock youths’ potential, enabling them to acquire the skills they need to become the next generation of leaders. Deloitte professionals apply their skills and experiences to address needs in the community through many types of volunteerism. Nearly 26,000 volunteers contributed almost 335,000 volunteer hours in 2015, and 1 million youth have been reached through Deloitte’s education and skills programs.
